Meet the Recipients of the 2025 ISCNWT Awards

On November 28th, 2025, ISCNWT hosted its annual Awards Night, an evening dedicated to recognizing and celebrating remarkable individuals from across the Northwest Territories. Each year, this event brings together community members, partners, and supporters to honour those who have made exceptional contributions through sport, leadership, and community impact.
This year, we proudly recognized six outstanding individuals for their achievements and commitment to strengthening sport and community in the NWT. You can learn more about each award recipient below.
Northwest Territories Teachers' Association Teacher Award
Giovanni Akeson - Chief Jimmy Bruneau School, Behchoko

Giovanni Akeson is a dedicated teacher at Chief Jimmy Bruneau School who has transformed youth recreation in Behchokǫ̀. He created the community’s first Learn to Skate and Learn Hockey programs, supporting more than 100 youth with inclusive access, equipment, and sledge hockey opportunities. His leadership strengthens confidence, healthy living, and community connection for young people across Tłı̨chǫ territory.

Sport Award
Rex Turner - Yellowknife

A standout athlete with Basketball NWT, Rex Turner has represented the territory at the Arctic Winter Games, NAIG, and national championships. His talent and determination earned him a place at the London Basketball Academy, where he continues to pursue high-performance basketball. Rex is known for his leadership, positivity, and commitment — inspiring the next generation of northern athletes.

Coach Award
Neilson Vandell - Fort Providence

Neilson Vandell leads the Fort Providence Table Tennis Club, creating a welcoming and empowering space for youth. His mentorship builds confidence, discipline, and connection, while his work with Table Tennis North brings opportunities to communities across the NWT. Neilson’s dedication and kindness make him a highly respected coach whose impact reaches far beyond sport.

Community Builder Award
Lynda MacCauley - Norman Wells

A committed volunteer and cultural leader, Lynda MacCauley strengthens her community through sport, tradition, and youth programming. She founded the Norman Wells Handgames Association and organized the community’s first local tournament, creating space for cultural pride and togetherness. Lynda’s compassion, leadership, and dedication have made her a pillar of connection and community wellbeing.

Language & Culture Award
Sarah & Davy Krengnektak – Tuktoyaktuk

Sarah and Davy Krengnektak share vital Inuvialuit knowledge by leading youth through the traditional fall caribou hunt at their family camp northeast of Tuktoyaktuk. Youth learn harvesting, processing, and on-the-land skills — returning home with a full caribou for their families. Through humility, resilience, and cultural pride, Sarah and Davy ensure Inuvialuit traditions continue for future generations.
